Telescope |
|
In Greek “tele” means “far” and “scope” means “to see.” Put that together and “tele-scope” means “to see far.” Telescopes use a series of lenses and mirrors to collect and focus light, then magnify the image so we can see it. The telescope was first used to observe the sky by Galileo Galilei (called the Father of Modern Astronomy) in 1609. One famous telescope is the Hubble Space Telescope, which orbits the Earth. It avoids interference and distortion from the Earth’s atmosphere, allowing very sharp images. The Hubble Space Telescope brings us images of far away space, and has been responsible for many exciting discoveries about the nature of the universe. |
