| The Milky Way
is a large spiral galaxy that formed over 14 million years ago. Our solar system is part of one of the "arms" of the Milky Way. Not only do our planets rotate on their axis and orbit around the sun, but our solar system orbits around the center of the galaxy in a slow, spiral spin. Our galaxy is over 100,000 light-years in diameter. The contents of the Milky Way include stars, planets, comets, asteroids, and nebulae which are the clouds of dust and gas where stars are born. |
