Seal Seals live at both poles and on the coasts of all islands and continents nearest the poles; they can also be found on the edges of Hawaii, Florida, and Central America. They have a thick coat of fur and a layer of blubber that helps them float and acts as a cushion when seals are out of water. Their large eyes are adapted to the low light of the deep ocean. Seals often spend their time swimming under huge blocks of ice searching for food and can hold their breath for up to an hour. Their diet consists mainly of fish, squid, shrimp, and some mollusks. All seals come ashore to lie on the beach or rocks and to give birth to their pups. Throughout history seals have been killed for their pelts, skins, and oil until, in the 1930s, hunting seals became illegal. In the 1970s the law was changed making it illegal to kill seal pups and to hunt any seal during mating season. Seals must watch out for sharks, polar bears, and killer whales. Notes: IMPORTANT:
