It stayed near lakes and ponds to cool off and drink water on hot days. Named "three-horned lizard" for the two gigantic horns on top of its head and one smaller horn on its beak-like nose, it also had large bony frills like a crown that protected its neck. Triceratops' beak allowed it to eat tough plants other herbivores could not chew. A short, heavy tail helped it balance. It traveled in a herd, eating enough plants to fill its eight-meter-long (26 ft) heavy body. Living in herds helped Triceratops protect its babies and defend itself against large predators.
