Slightly smaller than today’s African lions, they had short, powerful legs used to stalk and ambush large prey rather than run long distances. The Sabertooth cat is famous for its two seven-inch-long (18 cm) teeth that grew from its upper jaw; it used its teeth by biting into the throats of its prey.
