Pteranodon

Pteranodon, a flying reptile, lived during the Cretaceous Period in North America. Pteranodon sternbergi had a unique swoop-shaped crest on its head.

Hollow bones helped the Pteranodon stay light enough to fly; it weighed only twenty-five pounds (11 kg) and kept its body high in the air by soaring on warm air that rose from the ground. Its body was covered with fur, which kept it warm and helped it fly. Its wingspan was between fifteen and twenty-seven feet (5-8 m) long.

Although Pteranadon had no teeth, it could swoop down and catch fish and smaller reptiles with the sharp claws on its wings and feet and a scoop-shaped beak. For this reason, it stayed near water; during the Late Cretaceous Period, Kansas and other midwestern states where Pteranodon has been found were covered in shallow water.
