Although these states are rocky and dry today, 225 million years ago Postosuchus stalked through thick vegetation and swampy waters in search of prey. Like today’s crocodiles, it had a wide skull with a narrow, deep snout full of three-inch (8 cm) dagger teeth used for cutting into flesh. Postosuchus had plates along its back for protection. Postosuchus was only eight feet (2.5 m) tall and fifteen feet (4.5 m) long including its long tail, but it was one of the largest reptiles living at that time. It walked on four legs; the hind legs were longer than the front legs. Crocodile-like ankle joints kept it from running fast, so Postosuchus hid in the bushes and ambushed its unsuspecting prey.
