Hyracotherium

Hyracotherium was the oldest horse, living fifty million years ago in damp, hot jungles of the Northern Hemisphere.

About the size of a small dog, it had four toes on its front feet and three toes on its hind feet.

Like horses today, Hyracotherium was an herbivore that fed on plants and soft grass as it roamed over the swampy ground.
